The Stuff of Legend
Let us take you on a journey through time of these beautiful grounds, still haunted by tragedies of old, that mix medieval heritage with contemporary culture.

The rich history of the Borde-Rouge priory plunges roots deep into the origins of western civilisation. Roman occupation, Saracen crusades and Benedictine monks have all played their part.
The Borde-Rouge priory is as old as the abbey at Lagrasse on which it depended. Since their arrival in the 9th century, the Benedictine monks contributed heavily to the development of the domaine, creating a large vegetable patch and exploiting the benefits of the sulphurous spring waters that run through the grounds. They soon recognised the value of the top quality soils of the area and armed with experience and knowledge of vine-growing, the monks, and generations of wine-growers that followed them, cultivated the grounds into beautiful countryside where vines and woody scrub co-exist harmoniously.
The legend of Philomene
According to the legend of Philomene in a manuscript dating back to the 13th century, the grounds of the Château Prieuré Borde-Rouge bore witness to a bloody battle between the Saracens and the French, and it is to the blood spilled during the conflict that the red soils owe their distinctive colour.
